Checklist for Moving Into a Newly-Built Home

There’s nothing quite like the excitement and anticipation of moving into a brand new home. It’s not without its challenges, however. For example, existing homes typically come with window coverings, landscaping and fencing, but that’s not always the case with a new construction home. As a top home builder in Wichita, KS, Sharp Homes created this checklist for moving into a newly-built home to help you have a low-stress moving experience.

Before the Move

  • Your builder will provide you with your new address and the expected closing date.
  • Contact utility companies to set up new accounts or transfer services once the closing date is finalized (water, gas, electricity, trash, internet).
  • Have your mail forwarded through the post office once you have your closing date.
  • Find out if your builder will be installing temporary window coverings.
  • Purchase any additional appliances not included with the home, such as a washer, dryer and refrigerator. It’s often easier to buy these appliances from the same place as your stove, dishwasher and any other included appliances.

Moving Day & After

  • Schedule installation for services such as internet, cable and phone that are not connected prior to closing.
  • Schedule professional landscaping, fence installation and sprinkler system installation if it wasn’t included in your home construction contract and you’re not planning on doing it yourself.
  • Purchase and install window coverings such as blinds, shades or curtains. In some cases, You could do it yourself or hire a window covering company to design and install custom window coverings.
  • Purchase and install shower curtains and rings, if needed.
  • Change your address with your bank, credit card companies and other important institutions.
  • Update your driver’s license and vehicle registration with your new address.
  • Make a note of your furnace filter size and the types of lightbulbs used in your new light fixtures so you can stock up or buy them as needed.
  • Keep your new home in top condition with a regular cleaning routine and consistent maintenance for your HVAC equipment.
